To Walk in Their Footsteps
King Bjartur Kaipo (Bullfrog)
The Lord of the Bale is an apathetic leader who spends every waking moment of his life eating himself into oblivion among other select vices that he enjoys daily. For almost twenty years, he has ‘ruled’ over the Bale. His leadership over the Storm Isles is regarded as something of a practical joke to everyone one else that resides there. When the Lord actually does make decrees or decisions that affect the clan on a larger scale, they are born purely out of selfish desires. Whether it’s the desire for wealth, resources or exotic females is dependent on his mood. The current war that has been raging against the Sleuth for a few years is the result of one of these desires. In this case, a desire for their opiates.
That his rule has lasted this long is obviously not due to a feat of being able to please his fellow clan. On the contrary, many in the clan wish him dead. Many have come forth challenge the king, and ended up killed or banished due to his sheer inability to die from most mortal wounds. At least three have tried to challenge him during his rule. Two have been killed, one survived and was banished, as tradition dictated. The use of poison is considered abhorrently dishonorable among the Bale, but some have attempted its use in an effort to bring King Kaipo to an early grave only to learn that his fortitude is not limited to physical injuries.
Perhaps the main reason that King Kaipo remains in power and has not forced a chance in their laws to overthrow him is simply that while King Kaipo’s selfishness strains the clan every passing year, he also maintains the traditions enough that they consider him to be honoring them, if only at the bare minimum. For the time being, this has been the one saving grace that has prevented all-out revolt.
